Daikin air-to-air heat pump delivers heating and cooling to A1-rated Galway new build

While new build projects not eligible for SEAI heat pump grant, Galway installation shows efficiency of air to air systems for supplementary heating and cooling, with generous retrofit grants available

CHALLENGE: SUPER-EFFICIENT HEATING AND COOLING

When homeowner Joe and his young family moved into their new 5-bedroom house in Menlo, a picturesque Gaeltacht village just outside Galway city, one of their top priorities was to install a heat source that would dovetail with the efficiency of their new home.

The detached new-build house, completed in 2023, came with a maximum BER rating of A1 and had been built to near Passive standards, with very high levels of insulation and airtightness reducing the need for a conventional heating system. The building was also fitted with solar PV for enhanced energy efficiency.

“We wanted a very efficient heat source with capability for quick activation and convenient controls, including remote and easy scheduling,” says Joe. “With a newborn baby at the time, we also needed cooling capability for hot summer days in a new build with south-facing windows.”

SOLUTION: DAIKIN MULTI AIR-TO-AIR HEAT PUMP

The family contacted Daire Coyle from Connacht-based DC Heat Pump Services, a Daikin-affiliated heating and cooling specialist. Together, they decided to install a Daikin Multi air to air heat pump with Perfera emitters to meet the family’s heating and cooling needs.

The system features one outdoor unit connected to two indoor wall-mounted emitters, allowing the family to comfortably heat the large open plan ground floor area.  The ability to cool the space in summer is an added benefit, as the house receives a lot of solar gain.  Whether it’s a new build, as in this case, or an older home undergoing a retrofit project, Daikin air-to-air heat pumps offer up to A+++ energy efficiency and can reduce energy consumption by up to 30%, delivering year-round comfort and whisper-quiet performance.

For homeowners considering retrofitting an air to air heat pump – for example, as a supplementary heating and cooling source – an SEAI grant of up to €7,500 (house) or €7,800 (apartment) is available.

RESULTS: “SET AND FORGET” FOR ALL-DAY COSINESS

As with most homeowners who install a heat pump, Joe and his family immediately noticed a significant uplift in comfort levels – heating in winter and cooling in summer – along with the convenience that comes with being able to remotely control their new Daikin heat pump.

“The system has been incredibly efficient and reliable since installation,” says Joe. “It suits our lifestyle perfectly; we use the mobile app schedule to set and forget during winter, heating the house through the night and waking up to a home that stays cosy all day.”

“We regularly use the mobile Onecta app remotely, for example if the house needs a blast of heating or cool air before we arrive home,” he adds.

HOMEOWNER:

“THRILLED” WITH DAIKIN SYSTEM

“We are thrilled with our Daikin air to air system, we love having a warm cosy home though the depths of winter and appreciate the ability to cool the house if it becomes too hot, with the controls at our fingertips while at home or away via the easy to use mobile app. The system was tested this past winter when we welcomed our newborn home from hospital. We had peace of mind knowing that we would have a consistent and reliable heating system keeping us all warm, no matter what the weather is outside.”
