CHALLENGE: REDUCE ENERGY BILLS, REMOVE OIL FROM EQUATION
For these homeowners, a retired couple living in Co. Donegal, there were a number of compelling factors that motivated them to invest in a Daikin heat pump.
The couple had been relying on a traditional oil boiler to heat their 3-bedroom house – a 209 sq m property built in 2008 – and, like all too many homeowners around Ireland, they had watched in dismay as their energy costs kept creeping higher and higher.
“We wanted to simplify things by getting away from oil, plus we were looking for a more consistent level of comfort,” says the homeowner.
When the couple discovered that their home (like all homes built from 2007 onwards) automatically qualified for a heat pump grant from SEAI, they decided it was time to make the switch.
SOLUTION: DAIKIN HEAT PUMP AND THERMOSTAT UPGRADE
They contacted their local installer and Daikin partner, Ballyshannon-based Northern Refrigeration Services Ltd (NRS), who carried out an energy assessment on the couple’s home.
Based on the dimensions of the property and the couple’s energy needs, NRS recommended a Daikin Altherma 3 air-to-water heat pump, which would work seamlessly with the existing underfloor heating both upstairs and downstairs.
NRS also helped with the SEAI grant approval process from the outset, taking care of most of the paperwork involved.
With everything in place, NRS went about installing the 11kW heat pump, with integrated hot water storage tank. They also upgraded all thermostats to a new internet controllable system that improved the efficiency of the heating and allowed remote customer control via the Onecta app.

RESULTS: IMPROVED COMFORT LEVELS AND HIGHER BER
By replacing their oil boiler with a Daikin air-to-water heat pump, the homeowners immediately improved their home’s BER (energy performance) from a C2 to an A3 rating, giving them one of the highest standards of energy efficiency.
The couple have also noticed an improvement in their home comfort levels, where the heat pump provides steady, consistent heat (and hot water) around the clock.
Finally, having removed their traditional oil boiler, they no longer have to deal with fossil fuels in their home heating system, including refilling their tank with expensive oil.
HOMEOWNER:
“OUR HOME IS DEFINITELY MORE COMFORTABLE”
“We were very happy to go with the heat pump that NRS recommended, it fitted seamlessly with our underfloor heating which made the installation straightforward. Now that the heat pump is up and running, our home is definitely more comfortable. From an environmental standpoint, we’re also glad to have simplified things by getting rid of the oil boiler.”
