Dublin apartment owner avails of heating, cooling and hot water with Daikin Multi+ system

CHALLENGE: REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION, HAVE SINGLE SYSTEM FOR HEATING / HOT WATER

For this Dublin apartment owner, the time had finally come to part ways with his storage heater.

Like all storage heaters, the system would only provide a single output on any given day, so in the depths of winter he could heat the 2-bedroom apartment in the morning, but not again in the evening. He wanted a single set-up, easy to control, that would provide both heating and hot water.

Meanwhile, steeply rising energy bills were also becoming impossible to ignore. Finding that he was eligible for an air-to-air heat pump grant from SEAI, he decided it was time to upgrade.

SOLUTION: DAIKIN MULTI+ FOR ‘ALL IN ONE’ COMFORT

The homeowner approached RTS Heating & Cooling Services, a Daikin installer partner based in Waterford but operating nationwide, who carried out an energy assessment based on the size of the apartment and the homeowner’s requirements.

RTS recommended the Daikin Multi+ system, an ‘all-in-one’ air-to-air heat pump that provides heating, hot water and cooling (air-conditioning). This combination is designed to deliver consistent, reliable comfort all year round, with the ‘split’ set-up (up to 4 indoor units plus 1 outdoor unit) flexible enough to fit into most apartments, small houses and modular housing units.

The Multi+ system is renowned for its unrivalled energy efficiency. Air-to-air heat pumps can heat and cool your home using a combination of energy extracted from the air and just 20% electricity, significantly lowering energy consumption compared to traditional heating systems including storage heaters.

Once the homeowner gave the green light, RTS moved fast. The company removed the storage heater and installed the Multi+ system, comprising three indoor units (one in the bedroom, two in the living room/kitchen), a 120-litre hot water tank, and the outdoor unit, in just two days.

RESULTS: LOWER ENERGY BILLS, ENHANCED COMFORT, IMPROVED BER

The results were immediately apparent. The retrofit took place in late January 2025, so the homeowner was able to heat his apartment as and when needed, using the Onecta smartphone app to maintain a consistent level of comfort even on chillier days.

As winter turned to spring and now summer, the homeowner has the option of enabling the Multi+ cooling function to ensure the apartment remains at a comfortable temperature even on the warmest days – making everything easier, from sleeping to working from home.

The installation of an air-to-air heat pump in place of an outdated, inefficient storage heater also boosted the bottom line. In the first instance, the apartment’s BER, which is a measurement of the building’s overall energy performance including factors such as insulation, ventilation, heating system efficiency and carbon emissions, is likely to have increased significantly thanks to the gains associated with a heat pump versus storage heater.

Finally, the homeowner was also very pleased to see a tangible reduction in his energy bills, even in the space of a few months.

HOMEOWNER:

“VERY PLEASED WITH MULTI+ PERFORMANCE”

“Since the installation of the air-to-air heat pump, I’ve been very happy with the Multi+. The installation was quick, non-intrusive, and resulted in a complete solution that heats the entire apartment and provides hot water.

Although the system was installed toward the end of winter, it still performed very well and I was able to quickly heat the rooms during colder evenings. Overall, I’m very pleased with the heat pump’s performance and the straightforward installation process. I’ve also noticed a decrease in my latest electricity bill, which is a great bonus.”
