Heating, cooling and hot water: why Daikin’s Multi+ system offers all the comfort you need

Daikin Multi+ ‘all-in-one’ heat pump provides year-round hot water and air-conditioning, perfect for smaller homes including proposed new modular housing structures

A glorious spell of early summer sunshine is always most welcome in Ireland, but it is invariably treated with a healthy dose of suspicion: “This could be our whole summer!”

Unlikely, of course. Our summers are getting hotter and hotter; undoubtedly a cause for concern at a climate level, but increasingly a practical issue too for Irish homeowners whose properties – often well-insulated or even air-tight – can get uncomfortably warm during the summer months.

With rising temperatures prompting a surge of interest in air-conditioning at this time of year, there is a solution that offers the best of all worlds. The Daikin Multi+ system is an air-to-air heat pump that can literally do it all: heating, cooling and hot water, all delivered with exceptional energy efficiency for year-round comfort.

Air-to-air heat pumps work by pulling energy from the outside air and transferring that energy inside your home, either heating or cooling the indoor environment depending on which setting you require. The Daikin Multi+ can connect to up to four indoor units – say kitchen, living/dining & bedrooms – for space heating and can also connect to your hot water tank, providing a consistent supply of hot water when you need it.

For small or medium houses and apartments in particular, the benefits of a Multi+ system are numerous. The combination of air-conditioning, heating and hot water delivers consistent, reliable comfort all year round, with the ‘split’ (indoor/outdoor) system flexible enough to fit easily into most spaces.

The real beauty of the Multi+ system, however, is its unrivalled efficiency. Air-to-air heat pumps can heat and cool your home using a combination of energy extracted from the air and just 20% electricity, significantly lowering energy consumption compared to traditional heating systems.

Moreover, Daikin’s Multi+ system uses industry-leading technologies including R-32 low-impact refrigerant to reduce its environmental impact by 68%, offering an A+++ rating in cooling, up to A++ in heating and A+ in domestic hot water.

The outdoor unit can connect to hot water tanks from 90 litres up to 230 litres, providing hot water for even the busiest households. And if you ever need more hot water than usual, there’s the option of activating the ‘powerful’ button to heat the tank electrically (the air-conditioning/heating can work at the same time).

The incredible efficiency of the Multi+ makes it an extremely attractive option for homeowners wishing to replace an outdated or ineffective water heating system such as an immersion system or boiler. The system is easy to install and once up and running, requires very little homeowner intervention, making it a low-maintenance way of heating and cooling the home.

Multi+ perfect for modular housing units

The Multi+ system is likely to be of particular interest to homeowners who are keeping an eye on a possible Government announcement that will allow larger ‘unattached structures’ – modular housing or cabins – to be built in people’s back gardens.

As things stand, homeowners can build a 40 sq m extension to their property as well as a standalone structure of up to 25 sq m without planning permission. The Government has indicated, however, that it is considering increasing the standalone structure size limit to 40 sq m, opening up a new housing option for many people who are desperate to get on the ladder.

The compact size of these new modular housing units makes them tailor-made for an air-to-air heat pump system such as the Multi+, whose sheer efficiency offers homeowners heating, cooling and hot water for a fraction of the energy consumption associated with traditional heating systems.

As the Government intensifies efforts to tackle Ireland’s housing supply issues, the planning exemptions for free-standing modular or cabin-style homes will put the spotlight firmly on sustainable, efficient heating and hot water systems. We’ll take a closer look at why Daikin air-to-air heat pumps are perfect for modular housing when the announcement comes.
